First, we will share a cup of coffee and get to know each other at “Centro de las Raíces”, the first cultural center in Cuba fully dedicated to enhancing afro aesthetics and identity in the island and Beyond Roots headquarters. From there we will travel to the town of Guanabacoa, the cradle of Afro-Cuban culture.
We will spend the morning in the house of the Babalawo of the community, where we celebrate most of the religious activities. Once there he will give you an introduction to Santería explaining the relationship between the Orishas (Yoruba deities) and Catholicism.
Then, you will get practical experience with the musicians of the team. They will teach you about the rhythms that we play for our deities, the instruments that we use and its importance and repercussions in traditional Cuban music.
After that, you can learn about the dances that we perform for the Orishas and the meaning of every step. At the end, you will have understood how music and dance tell the story of the desires and struggles of our African ancestors.
