If you are already in Cuba, you can book 48 hours in advance

We begin our journey at Beyond Roots, where you will be welcomed with a bottle of water and a cup of coffee.
Here, you will learn about the mission and story of our project, setting the tone for a profound cultural experience.

Historical immersion:
As we stroll through the streets, you’ll discover the transformative history that is often overlooked, and observe the marks left by our ancestors.
We’ll delve into the conspiracies and struggles of enslaved Africans, discussing their fight for abolition and rights.

Our adventure begins in Plaza del Cristo in Old Havana, where the city’s rich history unfolds before your eyes. In this historic location, we will explore the stories of the church and the park. We will also touch on the fascinating subject of Afro-Cuban religions and religious syncretism in Cuba.

Then, we stroll down Teniente Rey Street, moving from the once less privileged areas of Havana near the old city walls to the opulent heart of Colonial Havana. Along the way, we will discuss social hierarchies of the past.

As we walk, you will learn about the ethnic groups in which our ancestors preserved cultural, religious and traditional practices that remain vital to Cuban identity today.

In Old Square, we explore the darker history of the slave trade that took place here.
Through a chronological review of the laws that governed the lives of our enslaved ancestors, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the realities of slavery.

Finally, in San Francisco de Asís Square, we explore the origins of the slave trade, as this was the original port where ships would dock and human lives would be traded alongside goods.

At the Plaza de Armas, we will explore the hidden story of the Battalion of Blacks and Browns and the role these soldiers played in anti-colonial conspiracies.

On our walk back to Beyond Roots, we reflect on the realities faced by Afro-Cubans today: the social challenges they face, the resilience they have developed, and their ongoing pursuit of dignity and equality.

We will then conclude the experience at Beyond Roots, where you can enjoy a refreshing juice or canchánchara and share insights from this powerful journey.
